Have you hear about Internet of Things (IoT)? Do you know what it is?

There is a great innovation which is taking on. Some call it Internet of Things (IoT) others Internet of Everything (IoE), but it refers to the same things. Let me give you a quick glance about what I understand.

First of all, let me define Internet, (for those who do not know). The Internet is a computer system that allows millions of computer users around the world to exchange information [1]. In simple word, when you open a webpage, or chat with friends through your favourite social network, is nothing else than information exchange between your computer and others computers called servers.  Now that I’m sure that everyone understand the concept of Internet let’s go forward.

So, what is “Internet of Things”?

Technopedia defines IoT as a computing concept that describes a future where everyday physical objects will be connected to the Internet and be able to identify themselves to other devices.

Whatis.com defines Internet of Things as a scenario in which objects, animals or people are provided with unique identifiers and the ability to automatically transfer data over a network without requiring human-to-human or human-to-computer interaction.

Cisco for its part defines the Internet of Everything (IoE) as bringing together people, process, data, and things to make networked connections more relevant and valuable than ever before-turning information into actions that create new capabilities, richer experiences, and unprecedented economic opportunity for businesses, individuals, and countries.

We all see that is very difficult to have a universal definition of IoT. However, to resume you can keep in mind that Things in Internet of Things can represent a pair of shoes with an accelometer sensor (pedometer), a farm animal with a biochip transponder, a fruit in your refrigerator with a RFID reference to alert you when the expiration date reached or just a flower pot which anticipate the need of flowers.

IoT or IoE provides no limit opportunities unless the creativity. This field has evolved from the convergence of wireless technologies, micro-electromechanical systems (MEMS) and the Internet (Pv6 addressing).

To conclude with, we can said without errors that IoT, is the future. During the last Consumer Electronics  Show (CES), IoT has stolen the spotlight of Smartphones and robots. Gartner economics consultancy estimates to 26 billion the numbers of connected objects in 2020 and CISCO estimates to 4600 billion dollars the potential of IoE.

Hope that this small post helped you to know more about Internet of Things. So now, try to use it as usual as possible and explain to your colleagues what does is mean. If you are an entrepreneur, don’t miss this wave, and for the passionate of innovation like me, stay tune you’ll hear about this phenomenon of connected objects.
